Gisela von Arnim was the youngest child of Achim and Bettina von Arnim. Her father died when she was three years old and she was raised by her mother. When she was twenty years old she published her first fairytales. In 1840 she met the Germanist and art historian Hermann Grimm. In 1849 she started an affair with the young violinist Joachim Joseph. During ten years a complicated and painful situation existed. Her affair with Joachim only ended when she married Grimm in 1859. Apart from her fairytales she wrote plays. He work appeared under names like Marille Fitschervogel and Allerlei Rauh. In 1888 she travelled tro Rome where she hoped to find a cure for her heart problems. She died on her way back to Germany in Florence and she was buried there at the Cimitero Evangelico Agli Allori.
