Otto Hofner was educated as a goldsmith and an engraver. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna with Stefan Schartz. He travelled to Paris, London, Belgium and the Netherlands to study. From 1904 to 1915 he was a teacher in Vienna but he also created his own work. In 1909 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. He created sculptures and medals in metal and stone and he made designs for the porcelain manufactury Augarten in Vienna and for the glassmaker Lobmeyr. He also created the Alexander Girardi monument (1929) at the Girardipark in Vienna.
