Maxie Wander was born in a communist family in the Hernals quarter of Vienna. She left school when she was seventeen years old and worked without further education as a secretary, photographer, journalist and scriptwriter.

From 1958 to 1977 she lived with her husband, the author Fred Wander (1917-2006), in Kleinmachnov near Berlin. She was best known for her book "Guten Morgen, du Schöne. Protokolle nach Tonband" that contained interviews with women from different ages and backgrounds. The book was also a success in West Germany. In 1976 she was diagnosed with cancer and she died in 1977.
