Son of the cantor of Belzig. He visited the Thomasschule in Leipzig where he was a pupil of Peter von Winter. In 1821 he went to Vienna to be taught by Antonio Salieri. After he finished his studies he travelled through France and Italy (1824-1825).

In 1826 he became musical director of the Opera in Dresden and in 1828 he succeeded Carl Maria von Weber as Kapellmeister of the Court in Dresden, holding this office until his death. Also in 1828 he married Marie Stobwasser. He mostly wrote vocal music, but also nine opera's. In 1842 he conducted the premiere of Richard Wagner's "Rienzi", with Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient as Adriano and Joseph Tichatschek as Rienzi.

Among his pupils was Hermann Behrens. Joachim Raff was a close friend during Raff's last years in Dresden.

20/10/1842Premiere of Richard Wagner's opera "Rienzi" at the Royal Court Theatre in Dresden. It was a huge succes. It was conducted by Carl Reissiger. Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient was Adriano and Joseph Tichatschek was Rienzi. [Schröder-Devrient, Wilhelmine][Tichatscheck, Joseph][Wagner, Richard]
