Johanna Loisinger was the only daughter of Johann Loisinger, the musical director of Pressburg, and his wife Maria Mayr. She was educated as a soprano and worked as an opera singer in Prague, Troppau, Linz and finally Darmstadt. She was best known for her Mozart intepretations.

On 6 Feb 1889 in Menton she married Alexander Joseph vpon Battenberg, the former king of Bulgaria. After the marriage they used the name of count and countess von Hartenau and they retired from public life. Alexander entered the Austrian army and they lived in Graz. They had two children, Assèn (1890-1965) and Zwetana (1893-1938).

After her husband died in 1893 she took her children to Vienna. She received a pension from Bulgaria but was active as a pianist and was the president of several musical institutions. She died in 1951 in Vienna and was buried at the St. Leonhard-Friedhof in Graz, where her daughter Zwetana had been buried in 1938.
