Francesco Lombardi was the son of the comedian Federigo Lombardi and Giovanna Zacchea. His brother Alessandro (1796-1824) was an actor as well. Francesco worked as an actor for the company of Antonio Goldoni. In 1825 he withdrew from the stage and by that time he was the lover of Maria Malvezzi Hercolani (1780-1865), the daughter of Piriteo, Marquis of Castelguelfo. Their daughter Maria Leucadia was born in Rome on 21 July 1821 and she died in Bologna on 27 May 1849. He recognized her as his daughter in 1835. He was known for his temperament and his alcohol abuse. In 1846 he was stabbed to death with a kitchen knife by a servant that he had attacked first. His murder was the subject of a play by Gioacchino Napoleone Pepoli.
