Maria reining worked at a bank before she started her singing career at the age of 28 at the State Opera Vienna. She mostly performed soubrette roles. After two years she went to Darmstadt and after that she was engaged in Munich. There she debuted as Elsa in "Lohengrin", conducted by Hans Knappertbusch. She followed Knappertbusch to Vienna in 1937 and sang Elsa there as well. She was a member of the State Opera in Vienna from 1931 to 1933 and again from 1937 to 1957. She sang under Toscanini and other conductors at the Salzburg Festival. Her guest appearances included La Scala in Milan and the Royal Opera House in London.
