Karl Lacher studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in Nuremberg. He became the assistant of his teacher August von Kreling. From 1874 to 1891 he was a tracher at the Staatsgewerbeschule in Graz. He was involved in the organisation of many important exhibitions in Graz, but also in Vienna, Berlin, Paris and Frankfurt am Main.

In 1891 he was appointed director of the Joanneum museum in Graz and in 1895 emperor Francis Joseph opened its new building that was designed by August Gunolt. In 1895 he became the conservator of the Zentralkommission für Kunst- und historische Denkmale (central commission for art and historical monuments).

His sculptures mostly portray people and his arts and crafts designs show neo-renaissance influences. He was also an active art collector and the author of several publications.
