Wilhelm Karczag originally wrote in the Hungarian language. He married the singer Julie Kopacsi in 1891. In 1894 he came to Vienna and in 1901 he became the director of the Theater an der Wien. He started staging operettas there and "Wiener Frauen" by Franz Lehar was an enormous success.

In 1908 he leased the Raimundtheater together with Wallner and he managed it until 1921. From 1917 to 1919 he also controlled the Stadtheater. His daughter married Hubert Marischka and Marischka took over the management of the Theater an der Wien after Karczag died in 1921.
