Friedrich Wilhelm riemer was the son of a civil servant. In 1787 he entered the Gymanasium in Breslau and in 1794 he started his studies in theology and philology in Halle. He worked as a teacher for the children from Wilhelm von Humbold and travelled with him toi Italy. From 1803 to 1808 he was teacher to Goethe's son August in Weimar. From 1806 he travelled with Goethe to Karlsbad several times. He married Caroline Ulrich and their children grew up with Goethe's grandchildren. He workred a teacher at the Wilhelm-Ernst-Gymnasium in Weimar from 1812 to 1821. From 1814 onwards he was secretary to Goethe and he corrected Goethe's works. He published two volumes of poetry of his own under the name of Silvio Romano.

In 1827 he succeeded Christian Vulpius as chief librarian. Afte Goethe's death he worked with Eckermann on publishing the collected writings of Goethe. In 1841 he published his "Mitteilingen über Goethe".
