Franz Anton Ries was a child prodigy at the violin. His father Johann Ries (1723-1784) was court trumpeter to the Elector of Cologne in Bonn. Franz studied with Johann Peter Salomon (1745-1815). He entered the Court Orchestra in Bonn when he was only eleven years old. Later he became its concert master and then its leader.

In Bonn he lived opposite to the house where Ludwig von Beethoven was born and he taught the young Ludwig the violin. Johanna Kinkel was also one of his pupils. His sons Ferdinand and Hubert Ries were musicians as well.
