After he finished school, Joseph Schreyvogel worked for Johann Baprist on Alxinger's "Österreichischen Wochenschrift" from 1793. He lived in Jena from 1794 to 1797 and there he met Friedrich Schiller. Hee contributed to Schiller's "Thalia" and to Wieland's "Merkur". In 1797 he returned to Vienna where he lived as a private citizen. In 1802 he succeeded August von Kotzebue as the secretary of the Burgtheater. He held this post until 1804. From 1807 to 1814 he was the editor of the "Sonntagsblattes" under the pseudonym Thomas West. In 1814 Moriz von Dietrichstein appointed him as dramaturge at the Burgtheater and from 1814 to 1832 he was the director of the Burgtheater. He retired in 1832 and died in the same year from a cholera infection. He was buried at the Währinger Friedhof. In later years his remains were transferred to the Zentralfriedhof. His old gravestone is now a cenotaph for him in the Währinger Park.
