Francis Lopez worked as a dentist in Paris and composed songs during the evenings. He met the singer André Dassary who cooperated with orchestra leader Raymond Legrand and Legrand included several songs by Lopez in his repertoire. Some of them were very successful in 1942.
By the end of the war he was a successful composer and in 1945 he wrote his first opera, "La belle de Cadix". It was staged fifty times. During the next twenty years he wrote successful operettas. In 1951 he wrote "Le chanteur de Mexico" together with Luis Mariano. In the 1960s interest in operettas faded, but he also wrote chansons and film music.
