Josef Jarno debuted at the Kurtheater in Bad Ischl in 1885. For the next fourteen years he appeared there every summer. In 1897 he became the director of the new summer theatre in Bad Aussee. In 1899 he married the actress Hansi Niese.

Als in 1899 he accepted the management of the Theater in der Josefstadt. In Vienna he staged modern works by authors like Strindberg, Schnitzler and Shaw. In 1905 he bought the Fürst-Theater in the Prater and he became its manager as well. In 1913 he performed in the German premiere of Molnárs "Vorstadtlegenda".

He left the Theater in der Jozefstadt in 1923 and from 1925 to 1931 he was the manager of the Renaissancetheater in Vienna. During the summers he was the director of the Kurtheater in Bad Ischl from 1921 to 1930. He died in Vienna in 1932.
