Grete Weiser was born as Grethe Nowka and grew up in Dresden. She married a sugar merchant from Austria, Josef Weiser. In 1922 they had a son, Günther. Her husband had several affairs during the marriage and Grete started building herself a career as an actress. In 1927 she had her first minor part in a movie. In 1934 she divorced her husband and she started an affair with Hermann Schwerin, the chief of production at the UFA studio's in Berlin. As an actress she had her big break in 1937 in "Die Göttliche Jette". More movies followed, but mostly she received minor parts. In 1948 she met Ida Ehre who gave her the main part in "Das Kuckucksei" on the stage in Hamburg. They cooperated several times and became close friens. In 1958 she finally married Hermann Schwerin.
