Wilhelm Lehmann was born in Ottensen, now part of Hamburg. His family was Jewish. His father was the painter Leo Lehmann (1782-1859) and his brother Frederick (1826-1891) was a politician. Like his other brother Henri (1814-1882) he studied painting at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris. Rudolf studied there from 1835 to 1837. In Munich he studied with Peter von Cornelius and Wilhelm von Kaulbach. In 1839 travelled to Rome to study and he did not return until 1846. In 1850 he settled London. In 1851 he was invited to exhibit at the Royal Academy. Between 1855 and 1859 he stayed again in Rome. In 1861 he married the composer Amelia Chambers (1838-1903), the daughter of Robert Chambers (1802-1871). Their daughter Liza Lehmann (1862-1918) became a well-known soprano. His younger brother Frederick married Amelia's sister Nina. From 1863 to 1864 he visited Rome once more. In London he knew Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Frederic Leighton and many others. In 1894 he published "An Artist's Reminiscences". In 1896 a collection of his portraits was engraved and published as "Men and Women of the Century". He died in London in 1905 and he was buried at the Eastern part of Highgate Cemetery.
