Mariann di Ricci was the daughter of Count Zanobi di Ricci (d.16/10/1844) and Isabelle Poniatowski-Luci, the illegitimate daughter of Stanislas Poniatowski, a nephew of the last king of Poland. She was described as beautiful and intelligent. In 1856 she married Alexandre Walewski, the illegitimate son of Napoleon I. They had four children. In 1857 she succeeded the Countess of Castiglione as the mistress of emperor Napoleon III. She was also close to the empress, who knew of the affair. She had two share the emperor with the other ladies of the court that he seduced, but she remained his main mistress until 1861. In 1867 she succeeded Pauline de Bassano as the First Lady-in-Waiting to the Empress. She held this position until the fall of the Empire in 1870.
