Wolfgang Hutter was the son of the painter and writer Albert Gütersloh and his lover Milena Hutter-Dedovich, the wife of the physician Karl Hutter. Gütersloh recognized him only in his will, but he was his teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1945 to 1950. He left the academy without graduating.

Hutter founded a surrealist art group together with Ernst Fuch, Rudolf Hausner, Edgar Jené and Fritz Janschka. He was a founding member of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. In 1954 he received a prize that was sponsored by UNESCO at the Biennale in Venice. Apart from paintings he created decorations for several theatres. From 1966 to 1997 he taught at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. His students included Gabi Trinkaus.

From his third marriage to costume designer Birgit Hutter he had a so, Xaver, who became an actor. In 1983 he married his fourth wife Edith Rosenberger, a graduate from the University of Applied Arts. This marriage lasted until his death in 2014 in Vienna.
