Albert Paris Güterloh was the son the clerk Joseph Kiehtreiber. His parents intended him to be a priest and he attended the Franciscan Grammar School in Bolzano. In 1904 he took acting lessons under the name of Albert Matthäus and he played in several provincial theatres until he was engaged at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin by Max Reinhardt. In 1909 he exhibited drawings at the Internationalen Kunstschau in Vienna. Further exhibitions took place in Vienna but also abroad. In 1911 he published his expressionist novel "Die tanzende Törin" ("The Dancing Fool"). He went to Paris as an art reporter and there he studied painting with Maurice Denis. In 1914 he married the dancer Emma Anna Berger, who died in 1917. During the First War he met Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Herman Bahr, Robert Musil and Franz Blei at the Imperial and Royal War Press Quarters. Together with Blei he published the magazine "Die Rettung" from 1918 to 1919. From 1919 to 1921 he worked as director at the Kammerspiele in Munich. He married another dancer, Vera Reichert, in 1921. He changed his name officially to Albert Paris Gütersloh in 1922. In 1926 he published "Bekenntnisse eines modernen Malers". From 1930 to 1938 he was a professor at the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. In 1928 he had a son, the painter Wolfgang Hutter (1928-2014), by his long time lover Milena Hutter. In 1932 he divorced Vera. Gütersloh was a follower of the nazis but his application to become a member of the NSDAP was denied and his work was declared 'entartet'. He lost his professorship and was banned from working in 1940. After the war he headed a master school for painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1945 to 1962.
