Son of the actor and director Hugo Thimig. Like his sister Helene and his brother Hans he also became an actor. From 1910 until 1914 he was engaged at the theatre in Meiningen. In 1914 he had to join the army and was sent to the Eastern Front. Due to illness he was sent on leave.

He went too Berlin, where he was engaged at the Hoftheater, the Volksbühne and the Deutsches Theater. In 1919 he married the actress Hanna Wisser, but the marriage ended in 1927. From 1924 onwards he divided his time between Vienna, New York and Berlin. After 1931 he concentrated on the movies, performing in comedies and operettas. In 1935 he was in "Viktor, Viktoria" with Renate Müller.

In 1934 he joined the Burgtheater in Vienna, where he specialised in the plays by Nestroy and Raimund. In 1939 he married another actress, Vilma Degischer. In 1965 he became a Honorary Member of the Burgtheater. In 1968 he retired from the stage.

Events
14/2/1944Ida Orloff and Hermann Thimig recite works from Hauptmann and Wildgans in Vienna. The Anton-Wildgans-Gesellschaft organized the event in the Mozartsaal of the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Orloff and Thimig read parts from Hauptmann's plays "Hanneles Himmelfahrt", "Kaiser Karls Geisel" and "Fuhrmann Henschel", as well some of Wildgans' poems. [Orloff, Ida][Wildgans, Anton ]
