Son of a professor of zoology who had come from Doplat to Breslau. When he was twelve years old he decided he anted to be an actor and at an early age he befriended Karl von Holtei.

In 1872 he obtained his first engagement at the theatre in Meiningen. In 1876 he moved to the Hoftheater in Detmold and in 1878 he went to Bremen. He married the actress Marie Leisch (1854-1932) in 1879. They had no children.

After engagements in Leipzig (1882) and Dresden (1884) he returned to Meiningen in 1886. In 1888 he was engaged at the Königliche Schauspielhaus in Berlin where he became chief director in 1890. In 1893 he staged the premiere of Hauptmann's "Hannees Himmelfahrt". In 1909 he returned to Meiningen once more and in 1913 he became the first manager of the new theatre in 1913. Between 1913 and 1918 he was the manager of the Deutsche Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. During his last years he lived in Meiningen.
