Jean Ernest de Beurmann joined the army in 1784 as a child soldier. By 1792 he had obtained the rank of captain. He saw action in the siege of Antwerp, the battle of Valmy, the siege of Mainz and at other occasions. During the battle of Fleurus (26 June 1794) he was wounded. He fought in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. In 1799 he was imprisoned in the affair of Saint-Julien, but First Consul Bonaparte made him a chef de battalion even before he was released. He saw further action in Ulm, austerlitz and Jena. In 1807 the emperor awarded him the Legion of Honneur and in 1808 he was made a Baron of the Empire. In 1809 he distinguished himself in spain during the siege of Girona. He became a brigadier general in 1811. In 1814 he joined Augereau's troops in Lyon. After the Bourbon restoration he was put in command of Toulon of 1818. From 182 to 1837 he was commander of the Var department. From 1840 to 1846 he served as mayor of Toulon. He died in that city in 1850 and was buried there at the Cimetière Central. |
