Franz Elsner was educated as a litographer between 1912 and 1916. After the First World War he attended Robin Christian Andersen's private painting school. In 1921 he joined the artists' association "Sonderbund" where he met Anton Faistauer, Anton Kolig, Franz Wiegele and others. In 1921 he first exhibited at the Lünstlerhaus in Vienna. In 1923 he decorated the church of Morgl near Salzburg together with Faistauer. In 1926 he assisted Andersen with painted Gobelins for the Festspielhaus in Salzburg. He married the painter Lily Kollberg on 18 June 1925. Their son Michael was born in 1931. In 1931 he joined the Wiener Secession. In 1934 he exhibited at the Biennale in Venice. From 1938 to 1945 he was banned from working by the nazis. After the war he led a master class in painting at the Academy in Vienna from 1946 to 1969. In 1951 he became an adjunct professor. He became a member of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna in 1959. In 1978 he died in Venna. Related persons is brother-/sister-in-law of Kollberg, Eugen |
