Emmanuel Benner was the son of the painter and textile designer Jean Benner-Fries. He never married and probably had no children. He was a painter of portraits, landscapes and female nudes. Among his acquaintances was Edgard Degas, who painted Emmanuel's sister Elisabeth Benner de Rutté. He collaorated with the ceramist Théodore Deck (1823-1891). During a study trip in Brittany he contracted an infectious disease and he died in Nantes in 1896. He was buried in the family grave at Père Lachaise in Paris.
