The painter Jean Benner was the twin brother of the painter Emmanuel Benner (1836-1896). Their father was the painter and textile designer Jean Benner-Fries (1796-1849). Jean Benner also started as a designer for the textile industry before he became a pupil of Ernest Hébert and Léon Bonnat in Paris. He was a friend of Jean-Jacques Henner and their painted each other's portraits. In 1866 he married the daughter of his host on Capri, Marghetira Pagano. They had four children and three of them became painters. The family often visited Capri. He ri. He died in Paris in 1906.
