Grete Bittner received acting lessons from Max Reinhardt. She worked as an actress in Vienna, Germany and Switzerland until 1939. In 1940 she met the actor and singer Josef Liszt. They became lovers and on 7 September 1941 their daughter Gisela Matzer was born. In 1944 she moved to Klagenfurt. As a member of the Notgesellschaft (the Emergency Association) she supported the reopening of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt after the war.

In Klagenfurt she worked as a teacher for 25 years and as a school director for another two years. But she also worked as an actress, a director and fror Austrian Broadcasting. She served as president of the Carinthian Women's Union. She died in 1973 in Klagenfurt. Gisela became an actress as well and she worked for the Stadttheater in Klagenfurt from 1967 to 1998. In 1999 she emigrated to India, where she founded an orphanage.
