Auguste Wolff was the son of a police commissioner. He studied at the Conservatory in Paris where Zimmermann was his teacher for piano, Halévy for composition and Aimeé Leborne for counterpoint. In 1839 he won a first prize for piano. From 1842 he taught a piano class himself at the Conservatory.

In 1850 he joined his friend Camille Pleyel at Pleyel's piano factory. In 1852 they became partners and in 1855 he became the director. Also in 1855, he married Marguerite Thomas, a niece of the composer Ambroise Thomas. They had twelve children. He built a new piano factory in Saint-Denis in 1865 and reached a production of 3,000 pianos per year. He invented many improvements for pianos himself.

In 1862 he received the Legion of Honor. He died in Paris in 1887.
