Mathilde Kindt was the daughter of Jules Herman Kindt, a teacher and a senator from Brussels. Her mother was Aminthe Joséphine Couyère. She married the art critic and art dealer Arthur Stevens in 1856. He was the brother of the painters Joseph Stevens and Alfred Stevens. They lived in Paris, where she wrote for "Gil Blas" under the name of Jeanne and for "France" under the name of Thilda.

She hds two daughters from Arthur Stevens, Jeanne (1857-1903 and Juliette (1858-1944). She divorced Stevens him in 1862 in Belgium at a time that divorce was not yet possible in France. She continued writing under different pseudonyms and her work under the name of Jeanne Thilda became popular. From 1856 to 1882 she had a literary salon that was visited by Guy de Maupassant, Émile Zola, Victor Hugo, Paul Verlaine and Alexandre Dumas. De Maupassant who based the character of Madeleine Foretier in his "Bel-Ami" (1885) on her. The architect and designer Robert Mallet-Stevens was her grandson.
