Jean-Baptiste Provost came from a family of merchants. He was educated at the lycée Charlemagneon in Paris but after a meeting with the actor Larive he wanted to become an actor. In 1816 he was admitted to the Conservatory and he won a second prize in trragedy. In 1819 he debuted at the Odéon Theatre. After the closure of the Odéon in 1828 he worked for seven years at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin. In 1835 he joined the Comédie-Française and he became a member in 1839. Also in 1839 he was appointed as a professor at the Conservatory. Sarah Bernhardt was one of his students. He continued his acting career at the Comédie-Française until his death in 1865.
