Max Maria von Weber was the son of the composer Carl Maria von Weber and his wife Maria Brandt. His father died when he was four years old and he was raised by his mother with his father's friends Martin Hinrich Lichtenstein and Carl Theodor Winkler as guardians. He studied in Berlin where he also worked as an engineer at the locomotive works of August Borsig. He worked for several railway companies in technical functions as well as in management functions. On 27 April 1846 he married Katharina Huberta Kramer (1823-1874) and they had three children. In 1849 he was employed at the Saxon civil service as Finance Councilor and he worked there until 1868. From 1870 to 1875 he worked in Vienna for the Eastern State Railways. In 1878 he joined the Prussian Ministry of Commerce and he travelled to England, Swedne and the USA.
