Frantisek was the son of Antonín Klika (d.1870), who was assistant to a barber. His father was an amateur in the theatre but he didn't want his son to act professionally. After his father died his family moved to the USA, except for Frantisek. He was supposed to join them after he finished industrial school. But when his mother sent him his ticket he sold it and he became an actor. He started in the company of Rudolf Linz and was engaged at the Provincial Theatre in Brno from 1924 to 1945. Starting in 1930 he also appeared in movies. Immediately after the war he became the manager of the Czech theatre in Brno but he left it after E.F. Burian became its manager. He worked for a while at the Haná Theater in Olomouc but there he had disagreements with the communists. He joined the new May 5 Theatre in Prague where he worked from 1946 to 1948. From 1948 to 1951 he was engaged at the State Film Theater. |
