Augustin Alexandre Dumont came from a family of sculptors. His father was Jacques-Edme Dumont (1761-1844). The composer Louis Farrenc was his mother. He studied under Pierre Cartellier (1757-1831) and in 1823 he shared the grand prix de Rome together with Francisque Duret. He was elected into the Institut de France in 1838. From 1853 until his death he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

He created "Genius of Liberty" (1835) for the July column at the Place de la Bastille. Several marble busts of the Brignoli-Sale family are located at the former palace, the Palazzo Rosso in Genova. His "Wisdom" stands next to the tomb of his teacher Pierre Cartellier at Père Lachaise. Further works are in the collection of the Louvre.

Dumont married when he was almost 80 years old. After his death in 1884 his widow married the architect Léon Ginain (1825-1898).
