Maria Schmedes learned to play the accordion during her childhood. She studied singing and acting in Vienna and in 1939 she toured for the first time and this inclused a performance at the Berliner Philharmonie. She sang in many languages, but she was very most successful with her songs in viennese dialect, interpreting songs by Alexander Steinbrecher, Ralph Benatzky, Karl Föderl and others. In 1940 her voice could be heard in the movie "Nanette" with Jenny Jugo acting the part of Nanette. In "Viel Lärm um Nixi" (1942) she played a singer. From 1942 to 1943 she worked for Willi Schaeffers' Kabarett der Komiker in Berlin. In 1943 she married the art historian Hans Sedlmayer and they had a daughter. Her singing career lasted until 1960 and she made many records. From 1963 onwards she and her husband lived in Salzburg. Sedlmayr died in 1984 she died in 2003 in a nursing home in Salzburg.
