Amalia Wulff was born in Berlin as the daughter of the Prussian court factor Liepmann Meyer Wulff (1745-1812) and his wife Esther, born Bamberger (1740-1822). In 1788 she married the Jewish sugar merchant Jacob Herz Beer (1769-1825). One of their four children was the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. Amalie never converted to Christianity.

Amalie was known for her literary and musical salon. She was friendly with king Friedrich Wilhelm IV and his brother Wilhelm, the future emperor Wilhelm I. Her salon was visited by Karoline Bauer, Muzio Clementi, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, August Wilhelm Iffland, Franz Liszt, Ignaz Moscheles, Hedwig von Olfers, Niccolò Paganini, Gottfried Schadow, Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, Henriette Sontag, Louis Spohr, Carl Maria von Weber and many others.
