Jean Melchior Dabadie de Bernet was the son of Joseph d'Abadie, Chevalier de Saint-Louis and Anne Marie de Santis d'Auban, d'Abadie. He studied at the Sdhool of Engineering at Mézières. In 1768 he obtained the rank of second lieutenant and in 1777 he was pormoted to captain. He served in Martinique and took part in the American wars between 1780 and 1782. In 1783 he returned to France. In 1789 he was elected into the États généraux du royaume.

During the Battle of Saumur in 1793 his horse was killed while he was on it and he was taken prisoner of war by the Vendée troops. He soon returned to action and in 1800 he took part in the Battle of Marengo. He recieved the Légion d'honneur and in 1806 he served in the Grand Army. In 1807 he was promoted to brigadier general. In 1808 he was sent to Spain, where he was taken prisoner after the surrender of Baylen. On 17 May 1810 he was made a Baron of the Empire.

In 1814 he took part in the defense of Paris. During the Hundred Days he was an engineer commander under General Lamarque. In October 1815 he retired. He died in 1820 in Paris. Jean-Joseph Melchior Dabadie de Bernet (1760-1844) was his nephew.
