Claire d'Agoult was the daughter of Charles Louis Constant d'Agoult (1790-1875) and of Marie d'Agoult (1806-1876). Her mother wrote under the name of Daniel Stern and from her affair with Franz Liszt, Claire had two half-sisters, Cosima and Blandine and a half-brother, Daniel. In 1849 she married the writer Guy de Charnacé, who had become a visitor at her mother's salon after meeting Honoré de Balzac.

Claire wrorte for newspapers and magazines including Revue de Paris, Revue Française, La Presse and Le Temps. Apart from writing original articles she also translated existing articles. She died in 1912 in Versailles.
