Daniel Haléy was the son of the playwright Ludovic Halévy. He was educated at the Lycée Condorcet, where he befriended Marcel Proust. In 1909 he published "La vie de Frédéric Nietzsche".

During the Dreyfus affair he supported Dreyfus, but later he supported the political right. Although he was a jew he supported Pétain's Vichy regime. He wrote the essay "Essai sur l'accélération de l'histoire" (1948) and published a book on his close friend Degas, "Degas parle..." (1960).
