Valérie Simonin was the daughter of the chemist Pierre Charles Simonin. She received a very good education. From 1850 she studied at the Conservatoire de Théâtre in Paris, where she won first prize for comedy in 1852. In 1852 she debuted at the Théâtre de l'Odéon under the name of Valérie. From 1853 to 1859 she worekd for the Comédie Française where she mostly played maids. She learned sculting with Roland Mathieu-Meusnier and he made a bust of her in 1854. In the same year she married the writer Léon Mallac in London. The marriage was annuled later that year in France but it was still valid in England. She started a relationship with Gustave-Eugène Fould. In 1861 her marriage was finally annulled and before they managed to marry, their daughter Consuelo Fould was born in 1862. In 1863 they managed to marry in Cologne. In 1865 they had a second daughter, Achille Valérie. In 1872 they separated. She continued sculpting under the name of Gustave Haller and also worked as a writer and an art critic. She had an affair with George Barbu Stirbey and made a bust of him in 1880. Fould died in 1884 and in 1895 she married Stirbey. She died in 1919 and was buried at Père Lachaise in Paris.
