Pierre Berton was the son of the actor Francisque Berton and the novelist Caroline Berton-Samson. His grandfathers were the composer Henri Montan Berton and the actor Joseph Samson. He started his career as an actor and appeared at the Théâtre du Gymnase, the Théâtre du Odéon and other theatres. In 1865 his play "Les Jurons de Cadillac" was performed at the Théâtre du Gymnase. "La Vertu de ma femme" was staged in the same theatre in 1867. During the next 30 years he worked as an actor and as a playwright. In the late 1890s he discontinued his acting and concentrated on writing. His "Souvenirs de la vie de théâtre" were published in Le Figaro Littéraire in 1908 and 1909.
