Charles François Berton, known as Francisque Berton, was the grandson of the composer Henri Mortan Berton (1767-1844). He first appeared on the stage in 1837 at the Théâtre Français and played in Vaudeville for a while. In 1842 he married Caroline Samson, the daughter of his teacher Joseph Isidore Samson (1793-1871). The playwright Pierre Berton (1842-1912) is their son. From 1846 to 1854 he worked in Saint Petersburg. After his return to Paris he succeeded Prosper Bressant at the Théatre du Gymnase. Later he appeared at the Gaité and at the Odéon. During the last year of his life he was mentally ill and he died in a mental institution.
