Charles Wiener published a small work on linguistics and worked as a teacher of German in Paris. He was promoted in Rostock on "Essai sur les institutions politiques, religieuses, économiques et sociales de l´Empire des Incas" (1874). In 1875 he travelled to Peru but he was unable to reach Matcho Picchu during his visit. The French government supported his expeditions to a certain amount but he was involved in a bitter rivalry with Théodore Ber (1820-1900).

In 1878 he became a French citizen and in 1879 he was appointed vice-consul of FRance in Ecuador. In 1883 he became consul in Santiago de Chile and in 1889 he served in Mexico. From 1895 to 1897 he was on a commerical mission to South America. In 1899 he was put in charge of the French legation in Montevideo ofr a while and in 1901 he was placed in Caracas. In 1908 he recieved the Légion d'honneur and in 1910 he retired. He died in Rio de Janeiro in 1913.
