Abraham Woodiwiss worked as a stonemason before he became a sub-contractor and then a member of the firm Benton and Woodiwiss, a firm of railway contractors. On 30 October 1848 he married Emma Wright in Duffield, Derbyshire. He became rich and in 1866 he settled in Derby, where he owned the villa The Field at Osmaston Road in Litchurch, now part of Derby. In 1880 he was elected by the Town Council of Derby to be mayor for a year. In that year the Royal Agricultural Society took place in Derby and he received the Prince of Wales. A second term as mayor followed and he was knighted in 1882 by Queen Victoria. He died in 1884 in Menton in France, but his body was returned to Derby and he was buried there. |
