William Robert Woodman studied medicine and obtained his license in 1851. In 1851 he volunteered as a surgeon during Napoleon III's Napoleon III's coup d'état. He set up a medical practice at Stoke Newington and he also worked as a police surgeon. In 1852 he was initiated as a Freemason. In 1867, as a freemason, he became a Grand Sword Bearer of the United Grand Lodge of England. In the same year he joined the Societas Rosicrucian.

After receiving an inheritance, he retired to Exeter in 1871 to pursue his love for gardening. He lived at Ford House, Alphington Road. In 1877 he became Senior Substitute Magus of the Societas Rosicrucian nd in 1878 Supreme Magnus. In 1887 he returned to London. Together with William Wynn Westcott and Samuel Liddell Mathers he founded the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1888.

He died suddenly in London after a brief illness in 1891. He was buried at St. Mary's Churchyard, Neasden Lane, Willesden, where the The Royal Horticultural Society erected a memorial for his grave.
