Friedrich Körner studied mathematics in Jena. In 1816 the university employed him as a mechanic. He also worked as a private teacher and Carl Zeiss was among his students. In Jena he worked at the Glasshütte, small glassworks that was supported by Goethe. There he produced optical glass and optical instruments. Körner also created a so called simple microscope. After his death in 1847 the operation of the Glasshütte was discontinued.
