Karl Volkmar Stoy studied in Heidelberg under Gustav Hartenstein. he was promoted in 1837. He went to Göttingen to study under Herbart and became a follower of Herbart's principles. From 1839 to 1842 he worked as a teacher at a private institution in Weinheim. He went to Jena where he became an associate professor in 1845. In 1865 he obtained a newly created chair for Education at the University of Heidelberg. He gave up this position 1874 and returned to Jena. In 1870 he became vice president of the Verein für Wissenschaftliche Pädagogik but he left it in 1876 after personal disagreements with its president Tuiskon Ziller. He died in 1885 in Jena.
