Marcel Hastir studied under Constant Montald, émile Fabry, Jean Delville and Victor Rousseau. In 1935 he settled at 51 rue du Commerce where he had his studio and lived for the rest of his life. During the German occupation he was allowed to give drawing and painting lessons in his studio. In reality his studio was a meeting place for young people that were active in the resistance. After the war he continued his career as a portraint painter, a painting restorer and a painting teacher. In 1946 he married Ginette van Rijckevorsel van Kessel. Over the years he had to prevent attempts to drive him out of his home. The last of those were in 2002 and 2004 when the building was planned to be demolished. In 2006 he became a honorary citizen of Brussels. He died in Brussels in 2011, aged 105. He was buried in the grave of his friend Carl Sternheim, who had died in 1942.
