François Bouchot studied at the École des beaux-arts in Paris where Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Guillaume Lethière were his teachers. In 1823 he won the Prix the Rome and hestayed in Italy for seven years. In 1835 he became chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. He received several commissions from king Louis-Philippe, among them "La Bataille de Zurich", now at the château de Versailles.

He married Francesca Lablache, the daughter of the opera singer Luigi Lablache. After his early death in 1842 she married the pianist Sigismund Thalberg.
