Martin Harryet was the son of Major Mountjoy Martyn of the Life Guards and his mistress Elizabeth Ann Haryett, who was known as Harriet Howard. In 1846 his mother became the mistress of the future emperor Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. After Louis became emperor as Napoleon III he gave Martin the title of Comte de Béchevêt. When he was 21 years old he publicly asked his mother is he was allowed to know who his father was. He married the Hungarian noblewoman Marianne Csus-Puszta-Szent-Mihaly (1848-1937) and they had three children, Richard Martyn Haryett de Béchevêt, Grisilde Charlotte Haryett de Béchevêt (1868-1944) and Marianne Josephine Haryett de Béchevê (1867-1943). His mother died in 1865 and he inherited the Château de Beauregard from her. His careless spending forced him to sell it to the Duchesse de Beauffremont in 1870. He died in 1907.
