Otto Wolfskehl was the son of the banker Joseph Carl Theodor Wolfskehl (1814-1863). His mother was Johanna, born Kaulla (1820-1894), a daughter of the banker Nathan Wolf Kaulla from Stuttgart. Otto studied law in Paris and Heidelberg. In 1863 he joined his father's company, and he was a director until 1881. From 1873 to 1975 he was a member of the Ducal Chamber of Commerce in Darmstadt. From 1876 to 1880 he was its Vice President and from 1881 its President. As a politician he represented the National Liberal Party. From 1884 to 1897 he was Vice President of the Second Chamber of the Hessian State Parliament. He was also the chairman of the Darmstädter Musikverein. He refused the offer of Grand Dule Ernst Ludwig to become Minister of Finance and declined to be enobled. His brother Paul Wolfskehl (1856-1906) was a mathematician. The poet Karl Wolfskehl (1869-1948) was his son by his first wife Paula Simon (1845-1876). In 1878 he married the pianist Lili Schulz (1841-1920).
