Ernst Brandes was the son of Georg Friedrich Brandes. He studied in Göttingen under Christian Gottlob Heine from 1775 to 1778. He was influential for conservative thinkers during the era of the French Revolution and was influenced by Edward Burke himself. His treatise "Ueber die Weiber" was meant to against the idea of equality of the sexes. In 1806 he was elected into the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen.
